Many of the residents of Pringle Bay have never had any reason to look up what the laws are when it comes to detaining and arresting a suspect. Now, with the legal accreditation of the Pringle Bay Street Watch it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the legislation.

A private citizen in South Africa may make an arrest without a warrant of arrest if a person commits or attempts to commit a Schedule 1 offence. But this only relates to Schedule 1 offences - see list of Schedule 1 offences below. This applies to all members of the PBSW.

A South African Citizen may also arrest anyone attempting to escape lawful custody.
